Hunger In Malawi 

Hunger in Malawi is not merely the absence of food but rather a dynamic between a lack of resources, access to water and poor education. 

The staple of the country (maize) is sown and harvested in a three month window that is dependant on consistent weather patterns. This single harvest is expected to sustain the farmer and his family for the entire year. This year alone, 2.83 million Malawians are predicted to experience acute hunger.

Those fortunate enough to have sufficient maize are often affected by a more insidious form of hunger, a hidden hunger caused by deficiencies in micro-nutrients such as iron, Vitamin A and Zinc. For the individual the effects of micronutrient deficiency can be devastating. If a child does not receive sufficient nutrition in the first 1000 days of life then are at a risk of permanent mental impairment, poor health, low productivity and even death.

Our Approach


Every year, millions of dollars of Aid are poured into Malawi to be spent on food relief. Rather than ‘hand outs’ we advocate for ‘hand ups’ to transfer knowledge, skills and resources to place Malawians in direct control of their food.

From installing irrigation, to lessons on childhood nutrition, to tutorials on solar drying - Garden to Mouth involves the entire spectrum of what it truly takes to be, and remain, food secure.
